Helpful Tips to Make Yoga Easier During and After Cancer Treatment

Yoga is an incredible tool for healing, both during and after cancer treatment. It can help you feel stronger, calmer, and more connected to your body. But, we know it’s not always easy, especially when you’re dealing with fatigue, pain, or other side effects. Here are 10 ways to make yoga more accessible and enjoyable on your journey:

# 1 – Start Small

Begin with just 5 or 10 minutes of gentle movement. Even a short session can provide benefits without overwhelming you.

#2 – Try Chair Yoga

If getting up and down from the floor feels too difficult, try chair yoga. Chair yoga is equally as beneficial as yoga done on the floor.

#3 – Use Props

Blocks, pillows, blankets, and straps can make poses more comfortable and supportive. Modify poses to meet your needs for each day.

#4 – Practice in Bed

Feeling really tired and fatigues? No problem! You can do a gentle yoga flow right from the comfort of your bed. Stretching and deep breathing are very powerful tools.

# 5 – Listen to Your Body

Honor your limits. Some days, your body may want a slow, restorative practice; other days, you might have more energy. Both are perfect!

#6 – Focus on Breathwork

When physical movement feels like too much, focus on your breath. Simple breathing exercises can help reduce anxiety, calm your mind, and even boost energy.

# 7 – Opt for Shorter Classes

Long classes aren’t always necessary. Look for 10- to 20-minute sessions that fit your energy level. Little bursts of movement are still effective.

# 8 -Try Guided Meditation

On days when your body needs full rest, try a guided meditation instead. It will help you tap into calm and healing without physical effort.

# 9 – Join a Cancer-Sensitive Class

Find a yoga class specifically designed for cancer patients. These classes cater to your unique needs, offering modifications that make yoga safe and accessible.

#10 – Give Yourself Grace

There is no “right” way to do yoga, especially during and after treatment. Celebrate every small victory and honor your body’s progress.

Remember, yoga isn’t about doing the perfect pose. It’s about reconnecting with yourself and supporting your healing journey, one breath at a time. Whether you’re on your mat for 5 minutes or 50, you’re doing something wonderful for your body and mind.

Stay strong, stay gentle, and keep moving in ways that feel good to you. You’ve got this!
