5 Poses to Beat Cancer Fatigue

Fatigue can leave you feeling drained, sluggish, and just plain blah.

The good news? A few gentle yoga poses can help restore your energy and leave you feeling refreshed.

Try these five poses to fight fatigue, and don’t worry—no intense poses are required!

1. Child’s Pose

This gentle forward fold relieves tension, calms the nervous system, and helps you recharge.

How to do it:

  • Kneel on the floor with your big toes touching and knees apart.
  • Sit back onto your heels and extend your arms forward, resting your forehead on the mat.
  • Breathe deeply. Hold this position for one minute or longer.

Make it more comfortable: Place a pillow or folded blanket under your chest or between your thighs and calves for extra support. If your forehead doesn’t reach the ground, rest it on a yoga block or another cushion.

2. Cat-Cow Stretch

Flowing between these two poses helps awaken the spine, improve circulation, and shake off sluggishness.

How to do it:

  • Start on all fours with your wrists under shoulders and knees under hips.
  • Inhale, drop your belly, lift your chest, and look slightly upward (Cow Pose).
  • Exhale, round your spine, tuck your chin, and press into your hands (Cat Pose).
  • Repeat for 5-10 rounds, moving with your breath.

Make it more comfortable: If your knees are sensitive, place a folded blanket under them. If wrist discomfort arises, try making fists or placing your forearms on blocks.

3. Seated Heart Opener

This simple backbend counteracts fatigue by opening the chest, increasing oxygen intake, and improving posture.

How to do it:

  • Sit on your heels or cross-legged.
  • Place your hands behind you on the floor or on yoga blocks, fingertips pointing away.
  • Lift your chest, tilt your head back slightly, and breathe deeply for 5-10 breaths.

Make it more comfortable: If sitting on your heels is uncomfortable, place a cushion under your hips. Keep your chin tucked slightly if your neck feels strained.

4. Legs Up the Wall

One of the best poses for combating fatigue, this simple inversion improves circulation and promotes deep relaxation.

How to do it:

  • Sit sideways next to a wall, then gently swing your legs up as you lower your back onto the floor.
  • Adjust so your hips are close to the wall and your legs are relaxed.
  • Rest your arms at your sides, close your eyes, and breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes.

Make it more comfortable: If lying flat bothers your lower back, place a folded blanket under your hips. For extra support, rest your legs over a chair instead of using the wall.

5. Seated Side Stretch

This gentle side bend increases circulation, relieves tension, and helps you feel more awake without requiring much effort.

How to do it:

  • Sit cross-legged or with legs extended.
  • Place one hand on the floor beside you and reach the opposite arm overhead.
  • Lean gently to the side, keeping your sit bones grounded.
  • Hold for five slow breaths, then switch sides.

Make it more comfortable: Sit on a cushion or folded blanket to keep your spine tall. If reaching overhead feels too intense, rest your elbow on a block or your thigh for support.
